The Guardian

by The Urban Cowboy on August 5, 2010 · 35 comments

He was at peace, a blanket of kindness and love enveloped his spirit like the tentacles of a giant squid. He knew all, yet knew nothing. His mind and heart were joined as one, like egg whites kneaded into soft, gooey dough. A concise knowledge of his being rose like the home baked, organic bread his wife would make.

Is this a dream? His thoughts asked.

“It is what you wish it to be,” the answer burst from nowhere, yet everywhere.

Then he was immersed in the memories of his wife, Donna, and daughter, Jane. He yearned to be with them, though his thirst to remain was unquenchable. He knew he would not be returning for the family reunion, he also recognized he would not remain here.

The Guardian

The Guardian

…this was his journey now

His path was chosen; always existing…he was one of many that return. Upon his arrival, he would loose his identity, yet remain the same. The enlightenment of who he was to become was infused in his essence, similar to the familiar aroma of home baked bread was to his senses.

He would become a guardian, this was his journey now…

Yep! Hopefully there will quite a few continuations.

I love the fact that he’s at peace though he yearns for the family love he realizes his path has been paved to that of a guardian. He’s no longer sad and that makes me smile inside Urban Cowboy~

This better have a sequel as i do agree with Brian :)

I plan on a series of short stories based on this character. He is Joseph, from The Family Reunion, who after death becomes a guardian. As he accepts and performs his new role, his “human” side may at times conflict with his “divine” side.

Plus, this will give me a way to expand so much more on The Family Reunion.

He seemed like just the right type of man to become a guardian. And while I’m sorry he won’t be with his family in quite the same way ever again, I look forward to seeing his journey unfold.

Yes, I think it will be interesting to follow Joseph for a while, especially in his newly found capacity.

Ha! His heart died, at the hands of someone he loved and thought he knew…who in the end was really a stranger to him.

I loved the beginning here, although it made me a bit sad!

His journey will be one that brings happy endings, I’m sure!

You’ve done it again…I’m in tears… This so reminded me of my dad and how I’m so sure he felt when he passed away… Thank you so much! Love it! And I can’t wait for the next segment…

It’s touching to hear when a piece of writing has a personal impact for someone. So glad you like it.

Having someone like him at your back would be comforting.

I think we all have a guardian at times in our lives.

CityMom2 August 6, 2010 at 6:11 am

Happy Friday UC,
Like the idea of continuation.
Must say the opening sentence puts our guardian in an uncomfortable paradox.
Is he truly at peace? Wrapped by the giant squid? Feels more like restraint…like he has not let go of his earthbound life. You have many directions for this character to travel. Well set up. So we’ll see …

Try to be happy, just for today

You, my dear, hit the nail on the head. YES, as he finds himself in his new role, his past “earthbound life” will at times present conflict within himself.

Can’t wait – ready for more. I luv how you match up pictures with your stories.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Thanks Ramona, I do try to visually present what I’m expressing through words the best I can.

I missed “the Family Reunion” so I guess I need to go backwards and read it!

This sounds like a very fascinating teaser to a compelling and fabulous series. I think this is part of what intrigues me about your writing, you always end the story with the reader wanting more :)

Hopefully that’s the case…wouldn’t want to end a story with the readers wishing they hadn’t wasted their time reading it in the first place. :)

Christina August 6, 2010 at 2:52 pm

Look forward to reading more.

So sad. But I want more. I see from the comments above that you’ll be continuing with this character. I can’t wait! What happened to his wife and daughter? Is their guilt in his thoughts? You’re killing me here!

Hi Natalie, this character is actually the father from The Family Reunion. I thought it would be fun to do a series from one of my stories, and decided on him. Yes, there will be a lot of mixed emotions, as well as different tales with him. :)

Megan (Best of Fates) August 9, 2010 at 7:37 am

Yay! I love when stories continue – it’s like hearing from old friends.
