I recently saw an advertisement for Straight Talk cell phone service on the TV. Oh no, not another wireless carrier trying to get their grip on me! It seems EVERYONE constantly does their best to sway the unsuspecting consumer to their side of the fence.
But Straight Talk caught my attention
Straight Talk promised me 1,000 minutes AND 1,000 text messages AND 30MB of mobile web access for $30.00 dollars a month! If that wasn’t enough, UNLIMITED minutes, UNLIMITED texts, AND UNLIMITED mobile web access for $45.00 a month!
If you’re like me, you are more than likely accustomed to paying close to a hundred dollars or more a month for your cell phone service.
I have been with Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T since wireless service had been introduced to the public. I have been averaging OVER $100.00 a month now since I can remember, and I really don’t understand why! I don’t go over my minutes, I have unlimited texts thrown in for another $20.00, so what gives?
Straight Talk Cellular Service
Maybe I need to look into Straight Talk
Curious as to whether this cell phone service would really deliver what they are telling me, I began to check it out.
Straight Talk is really TracFone on Verizon’s wireless network, marketed by Walmart
Okay, you just caught my attention!
- TracFone has been in the prepaid cell phone market now for years
- Verizon has one of the most established wireless networks
- Walmart is one of the most trusted names in business
Straight Talk was a No Brainer
Needless to say, I made the switch to Straight Talk, and haven’t looked back since! This is perfect for me, especially during the current economic environment. Although this fits nicely for me, it may not be for everyone, so I will attempt to list the pros and cons of Straight Talk.
Pros
The following list is from my personal experience with Straight Talk.
- COST…need I say more!
- Wireless Network is really Verizon
- Customer Service. I had initially purchase the cheapest phone to test the service with, after I had decided to stick with it, I picked out another model. Going to Walmart to make the exchange was no problem, they exchanged the phone, and transfered any time I had left on to the new phone.
- Number portability. I was able to transfer my cellular number to the new service.
Cons
There aren’t really any cons per say, rather what I would consider minor inconveniences.
- Limited models and styles of cell phones. My phone does plenty for me, and is better than the Motorola KRZR that I used to have. But for others the selection may prove limited.
- Upfront cost of phone. You have to purchase the phone separately. I had no problem, because after the first month most of my upfront costs would be absorbed compared to the plan I used to have.
- Before each call you are forced to hear a recording of how much time you have left on your card. This may or may not be an issue. For me, it is a little irritating, though a small price to pay for my savings.
- You have to purchase another card/airtime every 30 days whether or not you used all the time from your previous card or risk losing your cell phone number.
Summary
I am very happy with my switch! I recommend anyone who is trying to stick to a budget to check out Straight Talk for yourself. Check out Straight Talk now.

I’m so right there with ya! My friend gave me his old 2G iPhone and I knew that I was going to be getting myself in for more than what I needed. Really, anyone with an iPhone has too much phone right? So my phone bill, needless to say, is over $100 and not going down anytime soon. Then I over indulged my hubby (as per the norm) and he got the 3G. We ended up with too many minutes and not enough txt (live and learn), had to change the plan. Even now we pay, $160 a month. How obscene is that? I am trying to figure out how we can change it. Like move waaaay out into the the country where no cell service exists and get out of the contract or some such. Is there such a place and do they need a chemist is the real question though isn’t it?

What amazes me is the similar programs and usage as compared to here in Malaysia. My phone bill average is also $100 or more a month. I just bought an iPhone 3G and for minimum $30 a month I get, I can’t remember the amount of hours and text, but 500 MB data transfer. I’ll have to wait till end of the month and see what my actual bill will be.

You know…I am with verizon and I totally love them. Been with them for YEARS, I had T-Mobile…HATED them. I am easily pleased though and Verizon fit my bill pardon the pun.

I’ve been with T-Mobile for about 6 years and have never had a bill under $100! I just stick with what I know, I guess.

I’m retired from The Phone Company, so I get a discount of sorts…but it seems less and less like it everyday…thanks for the tips.
UP
I couldn’t agree more, in the sea of cell phone plans and so called ‘deals’, finding Straight Talk’s Unlimited Plan was like a revelation. I use my phone a lot for work, and used to pay accordingly, but this saves me a lot of money each month. Also because they’re on Verizon’s network its not like buying the beta version of a product, knowing its going to fail or have glitches, its an established system already.
I just got a Samsung Finesse Smartphone from Straight talk for $328.99 and it’s awesome!!It has 3G, a really cool large touch screen, high-speed EVDO data connection (my messages download in 45 seconds), camcorder, bluetooth and much more! The best is with their $45.00pm prepaid unlimited calls texts and data plan I will save $1500.00 over the next 2 years compared to an I-Phone. Verizon is trouble free so I have a sweet deal!
I agree with Edwin. I LOVE Straight Talk. it has great coverage since it runs on Verizon’s network. My phone never drops calls. The value is also so great! I’m saving so much money because it’s only $45 for an unlimited monthly plan.
GREAT DEAL BUT IF U HAVE A BAD WEEK AND U R SHORT ON MONEY THEN THEY BECOME HORRIBLE IF U CANT PAY UR BILL QUICK ENOUGH IF U DONT MIND LOOSIN UR NUMBER SO BE IT. THATS THE ONLY BAD THING I HAVE TO SAYE SERVICE WAS GREAT TEXTED ALL DAY. GAVE MY NUMBER AWAY IN 4 DAYS THEY SUCK NOW ACTUALY THEY CAN GIVE IT AWAY IN A DAY SO THEY SUCK NOW ALL I CAN SAY IS MAKE SURE U PAY UR BILL ON TIME BECAUSE THEY WILL GIVE UR NUMBER TO SOME ELSE AND I HAVE A BUSINESS WITH BUSINESS CARDS AND I LOST MY NUMBER AND MY BUISNESS CARDS ARE USELESS NOW THANKS STRAIGHT TALK . ONE THING I CAN SAY ABOUT ATT PREPAID THAT IS BETTER IS ATLEAST THEY HOLD ON TO UR NUMBER FOR 60 TO 90 DAYS THE BEAUTY OF A SIM CARD IF I WOULD OF KNOWN I WOULDNT GET MY MY NUMBER I WOULD OF NEVER CAME BACK
