Cowboy Coffee

July 13, 2009

Cowboy coffee is never filtered, with the grounds being boiled in the pot. If you want to make sure it’s strong enough for a real cowboy, just toss in a horseshoe…if it floats, it’s just right.

The secret to cowboy coffee is to get the grounds to settle at the bottom of the pot. Some of the ways to accomplish this was to use eggshells; another is to use a dash of cold water. Just don’t forget the grounds are on the bottom and shake the pot.

7. Remove the coffee pot from the heat and add 1/2 cup cold water to settle the grounds. Wait 5 minutes without disturbing the pot, and serve.

At first I thought the bacon was somehow going in the coffee, LOL! Was this an old family recipe?

Nothing better than good thick cowboy coffee. I used to make it every morning when I lived in Wyoming. I had to build a fire first though, which made the ritual all the more romantic for me.

Thanks for finding your way to my blog, btw. It’s always nice to meet a new reader, especially one who has such a snazzy blog of their own. Great post!

Hokie Deb ~ You’re right about bacon!

amy2boys ~ Yep, the orange peel adds a little pizzaz! And thank you.

Dandy ~ Hope you like it as much as I do.

nicola ~ Out camping is the best time for cowboy coffee, I read about all these gadgets that are available for camping, but I feel they take away from the outdoors experience.

Piper of Love ~ I agree…and thank you.

That sounds like some mighty strong coffee. Wondered for a minute where that bacon was going, glad to see it didn’t make it to the pot. There’s nothing like the smell of coffee and bacon in the morning.
Thanks for stopping by by blog.

LOL! I did a post about how to make cowboy coffee a while back, too. I had a different set of photos…more cowboy than coffee, nevertheless, the essentials of the recipe are there. I swear, that’s the only way I make my coffee now. It takes the best!

Here it is, if you want to see my version:
